Back to the Swamp!
Return to Winnowing Reach
Waking up the following morning, the party prepares breakfast, and searches the area for useful materials. Leo crafts a crude umbrella using his inherent Mapach ingenuity, as Lucius entreats Yarrow to help him learn more about the Druidic ways. Phoebe, now having revealed her true name, remains aloof.
After a hard day's travel through rain and mud, the Chamber Made arrive in town, having noticed a large amount of slime activity on their way. Magistrate Krane welcomes the party, and Kenna, back to Winnowing Reach with open arms, and promises to have their letter of recommendation written up by the following morning. The party is rewarded for their efforts, and return to The Wrangler's Rest for the evening.
Throwing their coin about willy-nilly, our fearless heroes buy more booze than they could possibly drink, though a variety of drinking contests put that notion to the test.
The following morning, a hungover Billingsley and Leo drag themselves resignedly through Winnowing Reach alongside the rest of the party to collect their letter from Krane. On arriving at the Magistrate's home, they are ushered inside hurriedly, and the door is latched securely behind them. A nervous and agitated Krane explains that despite his letter of recommendation, one final good deed would do wonders for getting the party a quicker meeting with The Birdfolk Council.
Krane explains that an evil swamp witch has been plaguing the area for quite a while...a vile and odious woman whom he clearly hates. She has been stirring up the slimes, casting vile spells, and what's more, the apothecary's formulae have been stolen, and the witch is the only source to replace them.
Agreeing to rid the swamp of this odious inhabitant, the party once more sets out to the southwest, but not before checking in on the apothecary whom Lucius and Yarrow had previously robbed, with Leo remaining impatiently at the town gates.
Amends, and a Contract
Arriving at the shop, the party discovers the apothecary, Endo Pevayne, Luma, weeping morosely across his countertop. Endo explains that he is in fact a charlatan, with no apothecary skills at all. He is a former economics student who has been purchasing his inventory from other merchants and selling it at a markup. The claims of stolen formulae are to cover his lies, now that his inventory has been reduced by recent thefts. Without assistance, he will surely have to close up shop.
As Yarrow and Lucius attempt to surreptitiously return the stolen goods, Billingsley begins a pitch of epic proportions. Eventually, he manages to pull Endo around to his side, and a bargain is struck: For 15gp of seed money, Endo will convert his business to "Purvayne? No Gain! Pawnbroker," and will agree to send 10% of his profits to Billingsley's forwarding address in Alderheart. Lucius and Yarrow create new signage and decorations out of a sense of responsibility, and the party once more sets out for the swamp.
She turned me into a newt!
After a few hours of travel, the party finally discovers the witch's hut, aided in their navigation by watching for signs of smoke and predatory birds.
The "Witch" quickly turns out to be an elderly Hedge woman. Susan, as she introduces herself, claims to be a Druid, and a member of an organization known as The Tenders. She relays apocalyptic visions to Yarrow in Druidic, and explains that the group has interrupted her summoning spell irreversibly, and that she requires fresh components to continue her work attempting to discover the dark portents' source.
After helping gather the requisite fur, scale, muddy feather, and frog spleens along with a portion of Yarrow and Lucius' foraging (a bull rush root and a dried lizard tail), the summoning resumes. With a bubble and squeak, a fluffy, pink, terrifying demon erupts from Susan's cauldron as her giant bettle familiar, Normal, chitters nearby. Susan furiously begins her line of questioning...
The demon's response is swift, and simple...with a giggle and a cackle, the vile creature fills the room with a poison cloud, and lashes at Susan, tearing a chunk of flesh from her shoulder with its needle-like teeth before she can react. The party fights their way through the choking, nauseating gas and destroy the creature.
An humbled, but resolute Susan dusts herself off, and addresses the party. She apologizes for the failure of her summoning, offers to inform them of her faction's goals, and allows the party to rest for the night at her damp but cozy hut.
